The German Wine Institute (DWI) has presented the 2023 grape variety index. According to the official and nationwide vineyard area survey by Destatis, resistant varieties in particular increased by 300 hectares last year. The Piwi variety Souvignier Gris grew by 183 hectares to 388 hectares, replacing the previously most important resistant variety Cabernet Blanc. Cabernet Blanc increased the area by 46 hectares to 306 hectares. Nevertheless, the proportion of resistant varieties, measured against the total German vineyard area of 103,687 hectares, is still at a low level of just over three per cent.

White grape varieties are still in vogue. According to the DWI, their share of the total vineyard area has grown continuously from 63.1 to 68.8 per cent since 2006. This corresponds to an increase of around 6,000 hectares to 71,378 hectares in 2023. Riesling was able to defend first place in the grape variety statistics with around 24,400 cultivated hectares. However, it was primarily Pinot Gris (+278 ha) and Chardonnay (+181 ha) that were newly planted. The white Pinot varieties (Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Auxerrois) now cover a vineyard area of almost 18,000 hectares.

Sauvignon Blanc grew by 79 hectares to a total vineyard area of 2,002 hectares in 2023. It has thus climbed into the top 10 most important German grape varieties. Yellow Muscat (598 hectares), Scheurebe (1,499 hectares) and Gewürztraminer (1,122 hectares) also recorded slight increases in area.

The area under red wine vines, on the other hand, fell by one per cent to 32,310 hectares. Pinot Noir remains the leader among the red varieties with around 11,500 hectares. Vineyards of the international varieties Merlot (+ 47 hectares to 933 hectares), Cabernet Sauvignon (+ 19 hectares to 502 hectares), Syrah (+ 16 hectares to 139 hectares) and Cabernet Franc (+ 12 hectares to 129 hectares) grew slightly.
