The Italian statistical office Istat has published new figures for agricultural production in 2023. According to the figures, wine, olive oil and fruit production was significantly lower last year than in the previous year. Wine production was hit the hardest - with a drop of 17 per cent. The main reasons for this are extreme weather events such as hailstorms and drought as well as high temperatures that lasted into the autumn.
In southern Italy, extreme peronospora problems also severely affected volumes. The south of Italy is suffering from drought again in 2024. Last week, the Coldiretti farmers' association warned of the consequences of the ongoing drought for this year's harvest.
