The Alsatian winegrower André Hugel has died at the age of 92 as a result of a heart attack. This was announced by his family. Hugel was educated in Geisenheim and Beaune before joining the family business, which was founded in 1639. Together with his brothers Georges and Jean, he embodied the eleventh generation of the family. Together they contributed to the growth of the estate in Riquewihr. They achieved official recognition for the late harvest wine "Vendange Tardive" and the"Sélection de Grains Nobles" made from noble rot grapes.

André Hugel was not only a talented winemaker, but also a recognised amateur historian. Thus, he was president of the Archaeological Society of Riquewihr since 1978 and board member of the Museum of Alsace Wines and Vineyards since 1979. In 1985, he was appointed Grand Master of the Confrérie Saint-Etienne winegrowers' guild. He also worked as deputy mayor of Riquewihr from 1989 to 1995 and as a town councillor from 1995 to 2001.

According to the family, André Hugel worked until the end with his successors of the 12th and 13th family generation - Marc, Marc-André and Jean-Frédéric - and contributed a lot to the current dynamics of the winery.
