For the first time, a classified Château has harvested the white grape varieties Marsanne, Rolle, Roussanne, and Viognier. Château d'Issan***, a third growth in Margaux, decided to establish an experimental vineyard with these varieties in four parcels after soil analyses and tastings in 2021. As Technical Director Eric Pellon recounts, the selected grape varieties proved to be less susceptible to mildew than the nearby Merlot: “We found only a few spots on the leaves.”.
A total of 15 hectoliters of wine were harvested. After fermentation, it will be aged in various maturation containers such as differently sized wooden barrels and a ceramic egg. The latter is intended to emphasize the fruity aromas of the wine. The wine, named “Jardin d'Issan,” will be presented during the En-Primeur week in April 2025 and then sold as Vin De France. If successful, Château d'Issan plans to plant additional white grape varieties.
