The Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) has adopted a special regulation at the recent members' meeting in Saar to support frost-damaged VDP operations. Especially in Saxony, Saale-Unstrut, Nahe, and Saar, winemakers have experienced massive harvest losses due to late frosts in spring.

To ease the already difficult situation somewhat, VDP members are allowed this year to carry the VDP eagle on wines made from grapes, must, or young wine from other VDP operations. The strict production rules usually stipulate that only wines made from estate-owned grapes may carry the VDP eagle.

“This ensures that the strict VDP regulations in production and in the vineyard continue to be adhered to and implemented in the interest of our colleagues in the VDP. These wines will be marked on the back label with the addition ‘A Wine of the VDP Solidarity Community’,” states a press release from the VDP.
