The wine estates of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) present their new Great Growths (GG) in Wiesbaden for three days. In the historic Kurhaus, this time 462 GGs are ready for tasting by around 200 invited wine professionals, journalists, and bloggers from 25 nations. The wines are organized into 82 flights, with around 50 service staff taking care of their organization and serving. They strictly monitor the optimal temperature.
The flights are initially pre-tasted and brought to the guests at their seats in the individually requested order. All GGs are arranged according to their origin. Wines from the same sites, produced by different estates, can thus be evaluated side by side for comparison.
This year, a total of 561 “VDP.GROSSE GEWÄCHSE” from 312 top sites have been released by the association, granting them the eligibility to be sold starting September 1, 2024. Of these, 313 are Riesling wines, accounting for 56 percent. This is followed by Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) at 22 percent and Weißer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) at six percent.
