Lambrusco winemaker Giorgio Medici of Medici Ermete Winery has passed away at the age of 86. Over 50 years ago, he and his brother Walter focused on Lambrusco as an export hit and made it one of the most popular wines in the USA.
"He recognized the potential of Lambrusco as early as the 1970s. His dream was to bring his father Ermete's wine overseas. Throughout his life, he realized this dream and exported the 'Concerto' – his most famous wine – first to America and then to the whole world," said a press release from the family.
Giorgio Medici also dedicated many years to various institutions advocating for quality Lambrusco. He was the president of the 'Consorzio per la Tutela e la Promozione dei vini DOP Reggiano e Colli di Scandiano e Canossa' and a founding member of the enologists' association Assoenologi. In the early 2000s, he passed the leadership to his children Alessandra and Alberto.
