In Spain, representatives of the wine industry expect that the prices for red wines will fall by up to 20 percent in the coming months. This would make production unprofitable for many wineries. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the average price for red wine in the first week of August was 45.15 euros per hectoliter compared to 46.24 euros for white wine. However, while the warehouses are full of red wines, there is a shortage of white wines in wholesale and retail.
Many young consumers prefer to drink white and rosé wines, which taste fresher and have a lower alcohol content. Therefore, producers expect that the gap will widen in the future and are looking for alternative solutions. Some are experimenting with producing white wines from red grapes. They remove the color pigments from the non-macerated must using carbonic maceration. According to representatives of the wine industry, the process works well. However, the wines produced this way have a different aroma than the usual white wine varieties. Whether they will be accepted by consumers remains to be seen.
