Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, President of Geisenheim University, has been appointed to the expert commission of the papal center for higher education of the environmental encyclical "Laudato si". The research committee deals with scientific, educational, and social activities related to ecological sustainability and social responsibility in agriculture and food production.
In this capacity, Schultz already participated in an audience of the committee at the Vatican on September 19. In his speech, Pope Francis acknowledged, among other things, the importance of the research center and the progress of the project "Borgo Laudato si'" at the papal summer residence Castel Gandolfo. With this, the Vatican promotes the ecological turnaround, which centers on the environment, human society, and its social cohesion.
Particular attention is given to viticulture. A central element of the project is the creation of a vineyard that combines tradition and innovation. The Pope emphasized that viticulture and other agricultural initiatives in Borgo are a symbol of the "good and fruitful relationships between the family of humanity and creation". The vineyard should not only symbolically represent a return to ecological values but also create economically and socially sustainable structures.
The center for higher education "Laudato si'" was founded in early 2023 and is aimed not only at academics but also at farmers, environmentalists, and other stakeholders who promote sustainable development. The project "Borgo Laudato si'" in Castel Gandolfo has been established on the grounds of the former papal summer residence. It is intended to become a laboratory for integral ecology, where agricultural innovations and ecological educational offerings merge.
