According to a study published in the "Journal for Clinical Medicine", red wine in moderate amounts is said to help patients with erectile dysfunction and generally increase sexual desire in men and women. The report, for which scientists evaluated a number of studies between 1993 and 2022, states: "The antioxidant properties of polyphenols contained in red wine appear to have a positive effect on the male reproductive system, suggesting a positive correlation between red wine consumption and testosterone serum levels." Polyphenols, found mainly in red wine but also in fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, act as antioxidants and prevent cardiovascular diseases and even cancers. Through their positive effect on the heart, they can improve blood circulation to other parts of the body, including the sexual organs. In men, red wine is said to work against erectile dysfunction and help increase testosterone levels and fertility.

When it came to the effects on women, the study found that those who consumed red wine in moderation experienced more sexual desire than those who drank very little or no red wine - regardless of age.

The study also looked at other alcoholic drinks such as beer. The researchers concluded from the results that red wine had a greater stimulating effect due to its properties. The authors pointed out that high alcohol consumption is detrimental to both sexual and general health.
