According to plant manager Kolja Bitzenhofer, the first VDP wines in reusable deposit bottles from Staatsweingut Freiburg *** are in great demand. In addition to the conventional 0.75-litre disposable bottles, 3,000 beer bottles (0.5 litres) of the VDP local wines 2022 Weißburgunder Blankenhornsberg and 2021 Spätburgunder were also offered for the first time. They were sold out after just three weeks, reports the operations manager. Freiburg is the first VDP winery to take this step. The deposit bottles are filled at the Freiburg brewery Ganter.

The symbol of the VDP - the grape eagle - and the reference to the classification are not on the capsule as usual, but on the back label. The VDP guidelines only stipulate that the grape eagle must be used on glass bottles, regardless of type and format. Only the Grosse Gewächse wines should be filled in bottles with GG embossing.

In addition, the Staatsweingut also markets three estate wines from Piwi varieties in the deposit bottles. Bitzenhofer expects that returnable bottles will soon be sold exclusively in this segment in particular. In total, Staatsweingut Freiburg plans to sell around 40,000 returnable bottles this year. According to Bitzenhofer, the reactions of the trade public at the VDP wine fair in Mainz a few days ago were very positive.
