The German wine journalist and author Steffen Maus has died in a mountain accident. According to statements from a school friend, he was struck by a rock avalanche while hiking in northern Spain on Sunday. Maus was particularly known as a specialist for the wine country of Italy and said about himself: “I feel like a ‘half’ Italian with a grandmother in Sicily!” He lived for two years in Tuscany and, according to his own statements, spent more than two months a year in Italy.

After studying chemistry, which he completed with a doctorate, he turned to wine and has been working for various specialist magazines since 2000. He contributed to several editions of the "Gault Millau Wine Guide Germany", published the book “Italy's Wine Worlds” and the blog “Wine Worlds”. In addition, he taught aspiring IHK sommeliers and held masterclasses and wine evenings. Steffen Maus was 56 years old.
