The decision of the southern French wine-growing regions Corbières and Fitou to leave the association at the end of the year, which was taken on 22 June, poses difficult challenges for the CIVL (Conseil Interprofessionel des Vins du Languedoc). The representatives of the two regions had not been satisfied with the direction of the association's communication for some time and found themselves insufficiently taken into account in the CIVL's marketing efforts. "The roots of this decision lie in the lack of communication on the part of the CIVL regarding our name," explained Olivier Verdale, president of the Corbières association in an interview.

With the split, the CIVB will lose a large part of its income, called "compulsory voluntary contributions". This amounts to 3 euros per hectolitre. With an annual production of between 200,000 and 250,000 hl of AOC wines - almost as much as the entire Languedoc - this means a minus of 600,000 to 750,000 euros. Corbières has announced to take action in its own region as well as to talk to other dissatisfied former CIVL members about a possible cooperation. The Faugères appellation will also soon decide whether to leave the CIVL.
