This Sunday and Monday, the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) will be holding its fiftieth Wine Fair at the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz. This time, 191 of the 200 VDP members will be presenting their wines to over 3,000 trade visitors from all over the world at what they describe as the "largest international trade fair for top German wines".

The predecessor event was the wine sales fair organised by the five largest Rheingau wineries in Eberbach Monastery. This gave rise to the "Rheinhessen Riesling Exchange" in 1974, which was joined by more and more VDP wineries from other regions over the years. Hence the name "Mainz Wine Exchange" was chosen.

The German Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, opens the fiftieth VDP Wine Exchange on 28 April. The winners of the "Excellent Wine Concept" will also be honoured. The supporting programme includes masterclasses on the topics of "Sparkling Revolution", "Terroir vs. natural" and "Spätlese: Survival of the sweetest" will take place. The trade fair is aimed exclusively at trade visitors.
