The South Tyrolean winegrower and vine grower Erhard Tutzer died in a vineyard accident at the age of 78. While fertilising near his Plonerhof*** winery in Marling, he fell about four metres over a wall with a tractor and was crushed by the heavy machine.

At the age of seventeen, Tutzer founded vine nursery in Bolzano in 1963 and later supplied wineries such as Gaja and Antinori. But his great passion was new, resistant varieties. In 2000, he entered the field of resistance breeding and began collecting resistance carriers of Franco-American and Asian origins. This was followed by various vine breeding centres and partnerships with research institutes in Italy and abroad with the corresponding microvinifications. His company Innovitis currently operates three vineyards in South Tyrol, which contain over 60 new resistant varieties. The resistant variety Aromera is one of the results of his research.

Tutzer was not only grower, but also a winegrower. He has won the prize for the best Italian white wine made from Piwi varieties at the Edmund Mach Foundation competition in San Michele all'Adige several times with the Solaris from the Plonerhof winery. Back in February, wein.plus editor Raffaella Usai conducted an in-depth interview with him about the breeding and development of Piwi varieties and his life's work.
