German rosé wine production reached a new high in 2023. This was announced by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of data from the nationwide quality wine test. The proportion of rosé wines among quality-tested wines rose from 13 to 16 per cent last year. This corresponds to an increase in volume of 200,000 hectolitres to around 1.1 million hectolitres.

The increase was at the expense of red wines, which now only account for 18 per cent of German quality and Prädikat wines. In contrast, the proportion of quality-approved white wines remained constant at 66 per cent.

It is worth noting that, at 51 per cent, more than half of all German quality and Prädikat wines were vinified dry. This corresponds to an increase of one per cent compared to 2022, with the proportion of dry wines rising by eight per cent compared to 2013. In 2003, only 36 per cent of all quality-tested wines were dry.

The proportion of sweet and sweet wines remained stable at 29 per cent compared to 2022. Compared to 2003, however, it fell by 15 percentage points. The supply of semi-dry quality and Prädikat wines has not changed compared to 2003, with a share of 20 per cent.

In total, around seven million hectolitres of quality and Prädikat wines passed the quality wine test in 2023. This corresponds to around 95 per cent of German wine production.
