Rosé wine is gaining popularity worldwide, especially in coastal regions and upscale restaurants. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), the global production of rosé wine increased by 25% between 2001 and 2021 and now accounts for over 8% of total wine production. Germany is one of the five countries with the highest per capita consumption of rosé wine. Spain is the second largest producer of rosé wine after France, with the Navarra region standing out in particular.

Navarre, land of rosé

Navarre is known for its pioneering work and innovation in rosé wine production. The region boasts impressive landscapes and diverse terroirs that produce some of the best wines in Spain. The rosé wines of the D.O. Navarra are fresh, light, aromatic and versatile. They are mainly made from Garnacha grapes and use the traditional "saignée" method, which ensures high quality. According to Nielsen data, Navarre dominates the national market for rosé wines with a market share of 30%. Navarre is also known for its innovative strength. Wineries are experimenting with different materials such as barrels, amphorae, concrete tanks and egg moulds to further improve the quality of their wines.

Garnacha from Navarre, the authenticity and freshness of northern Spain

Garnacha is the emblematic grape variety of Navarre and forms the basis for the region's famous rosé and red wines. This grape thrives in the highest vineyards in Navarre, resulting in a less alcoholic Garnacha with unique acidity. In the D.O. Navarra, both Atlantic and Mediterranean Garnachas are cultivated, which are characterised by their Nordic freshness.

Experts praise Navarra

To coincide with "World Rosé Wine Day", the Rosadum conference was held in Navarre, attended by leading international experts. Elizabeth Gabay, Master of Wine and leading author and consultant for rosé wines, emphasised Navarre's historical tradition as a rosé wine region and highlighted the quality of the D.O. Navarra rosé wines after tasting over sixty wines. Gabay particularly praised the traditional rosés from Navarre for their strawberry red colour and aromatic diversity.
