The wine-growing region of Burgundy has set itself the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent by 2035. The first and most effective step towards this is to use lighter glass bottles. The Burgundy Interprofessional Committee responsible for marketing (BIVB) estimates that switching to bottles with an average weight of 400 grams and a recycled glass content of 80 per cent would reduce the carbon footprint by 20 per cent.

Domaine Joblot, which cultivates 14 hectares of vineyards, provides an example of the impact of lighter bottles. Since reducing the weight of its bottles by 100 grams, it has saved around ten tonnes of glass per vintage. According to estate manager Hélène Sarkis, this "immediately makes it clear to customers what our initiative is all about. And we feel that an entire generation of customers is increasingly paying attention to their carbon footprint.".
