The historic Moscato d'Asti growing area will become its own appellation called Canelli DOCG with immediate effect. With the publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, the new appellation officially comes into force, consisting of 17 municipalities around the town of Canelli: Bubbio, Calamandrana, Calosso, Canelli, Cassinasco, Castagnole Lanze, Coazzolo, Costigliole d'Asti, Loazzolo, Moasca and San Marzano Oliveto in the province of Asti, and Castiglione Tinella, Cossano Belbo, Neive, Neviglie, Mango and S. Stefano Belbo in the province of Cuneo. The Moscato Bianco grape variety is grown for the production of Moscato d'Asti. For the vice president of the Asti DOCG consortium, Flavio Giacomo Scagliola, this is a particularly important recognition for Canelli. The village is considered one of the flagships of Piedmontese quality viticulture and especially of Moscato d'Asti. As early as 1865, Carlo Gancia had invented the forerunner of Asti Spumante from 100 per cent Moscato grapes in Canelli.

The Canelli DOCG is produced both in the fresh, aromatic sweet version and in the Riserva variant, which is allowed to be sold after 30 months of ageing at the earliest. Manual harvesting of the grapes is obligatory. Production currently totals around one million bottles.
