The tenth international symposium of the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) came to an end on Sunday 2 July in Wiesbaden. For the first time, Germany hosted the high-calibre event, which was attended by over 500 wine experts from 40 countries. The motto of the symposium was "A taste for the future". The topics of the presentations ranged from the limits of wine research, moderated by Prof Hans R. Schultz, to a cool future for Pinot Noir and a special interview by Susie Barrie MW and Peter Richards MW with world-famous actor John Malkovich.
For a talk entitled "Wine against all odds", moderator Caro Maurer MW discussed with Svitlana Tsybak (Ukraine), Dr Monique Bell (USA), Sonal Holland MW (India) and Sibel Kutman Oral (Turkey) on the podium (picture). They described the difficult situation of the wine industry in their countries of origin: Wine growing in times of war in Ukraine, restrictive policies and religious contradictions in Turkey, renewed civil rights and "Buy Black" movements in the USA and the underdeveloped wine culture in India.
At the "Taste the Mastery" tasting, 36 Master of Wine winemakers, including the German wine producers and Masters of Wine Janek Schumann (Saxony) and Jürgen von der Mark (Baden), each presented two of their most interesting products.
The Managing Director of the IMW thanked the organisers Caro Maurer MW, Alison Flemming MW and the entire team: "We are delighted with the consistently positive feedback we received over the four days. Our thanks also go to our hosts, the German Wine Institute (DWI), the City of Wiesbaden, the State of Hesse and all our sponsors, who helped us to organise a truly memorable event."
The 11th IMW Symposium will take place in Adelaide (South Australia) in 2026.
