Giovanni Geddes Da Filicaja, long-time managing director of the Frescobaldi group and of the Ornellaia and Masseto wine estates, has announced his resignation during the "Ornellaia Vendemmia d'Artista in Venice" auction. The 78-year-old wants to hand over his post at the end of the year to Fabrizio Dosi, who has already been working in a leading position at the Frescobaldi group since 2018.

Geddes, who studied at Cambridge, joined Frescobaldi at the end of 1996 and was initially responsible for the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, which also produced the Masseto wine. In 2012, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was renamed Ornellaia and Masseto was established as a winery. He shaped both wineries with his visionary corporate style. In 2008, Geddes brought Masseto to the Place de Bordeaux trading post. It was the first Italian wine sold by a Bordeaux négociant and paved the way for dozens of top producers from Italy.

Giovanni Geddes' announcement comes just a month after oenologist Olga Fusari announced she was leaving the winery. Operations manager Axel Heinz had already made his resignation public in March 2023. Heinz will move to Château Lascombes in Bordeaux this autumn. Olga Fusari and Alex Heinz had both been working for Ornellaia since 2005.
