Until now, there has been confusion among winegrowers about the labelling requirements that will apply to sparkling wine labels from December 2023. While it is clearly regulated for still wines that wines produced from 8 December onwards must bear ingredients and nutritional information on the label, it was not clearly defined for sparkling wines when a wine is considered "produced": whether before, during or after the first or second fermentation. The EU Commission has now clarified this: For bottle-fermented sparkling wines, the second fermentation must have taken place. For example, if a sparkling wine, cava or champagne has reached the required alcohol content and overpressure by the deadline of 8 December 2023, the required information must appear on its label.
