The "Dossier Frizzanti" of the Corriere Vinicolo reports an export record for Italian Frizzante. In 2020, a total of 400 million bottles of sparkling wines were sold with a turnover of 305 million euros in Italy and 429 million euros abroad. This corresponds to an increase of four percent in exports. Frizzante wines thus fared better in the pandemic year than spumanti, whose sales declined by seven percent. However, prices fell by four per cent on average, which is not only due to the Corona consequences, but also to the very large 2018 harvest. Frizzante accounts for nine per cent of the total volume and seven per cent of the value of Italian wine exports. The most important market is Germany with 26 per cent, followed by the USA (19 per cent), Mexico (seven per cent) and Austria, Russia, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and France with four per cent each.
90 per cent of the sparkling wines produced with less than 2.5 bar carbon dioxide pressure come from just two regions: Emilia Romagna and Veneto. Lambrusco takes the largest share with 160 million bottles, ahead of Prosecco Frizzante with 87 million bottles. White and red wines each account for 45 percent, rosé wines for ten percent. It is interesting to note that all grape varieties permitted in Italy are also used for Frizzante.
