In a public letter to the Italian daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, Simone Vincenzo Velluti Zati di San Clemente defends himself against the allegation that his father had deliberately hoodwinked Sting in the sale of the Il Palagio wine estate(see news item of 19.08.2021). The Dukes' son called the statement a "poisonous slander" against his late father.

"Apart from the fact that an internationally experienced gentleman like Sting (he was 46 at the time) should not confuse Barolo with Chianti, Nebbiolo with Sangiovese, nothing could be more alien to my father's character, habits, behaviour, in a word, spirit, than to behave like a fraudulent innkeeper," Velluti Zati said in his letter. "My father lived until 2012, so Sting had about 15 years to allow him to respond to this accusation in person, but the statement was not only malicious, but so absurd and implausible that it sounded like a boomerang. Instead, Sting decided to do it 'a babbo morto', as they say in Tuscany, namely when the father has died," Velluti Zati continued. At the end of the letter, Velluti Zati di San Clemente demanded an apology from Sting.
