Strong demand for champagne could lead to shortages towards the end of the year. Due to the lockdowns in the Corona pandemic and the Trump tariffs, demand dropped significantly in 2020. As a result, the Comité Champagne has severely limited the 2020 harvest yields and many Champagne houses have decided to reduce the number of bottles they bottle. In addition, several strong quality vintages in a row have meant that more wine has been held back to be marketed as vintage wines, leaving less available for regular non-vintage Champagne. With many markets, especially the US and UK, experiencing stronger than expected growth following the end of punitive tariffs and restaurant restrictions, supply is now constrained. Buyers could feel the effects of this at Christmas time, when the usual special offers are cancelled.
