The regulatory council of the DO Cava has limited the harvest yields for the second year in a row. In 2021, a maximum of 11,000 kg of grapes per hectare will be harvested instead of the 12,000 kg otherwise permitted. This limit was already lowered to 10,000 kg in 2020 because of the Corona crisis. The president of the council, Javier Pagés, hopes this will correct the surpluses caused by excessive planting in the DO and sales slumps caused by Covid-19. The decision was approved by the majority of the twelve members of the council. It is intended to ensure "fair production prices" for the region's approximately 6,800 winegrowers. With an export of 70 percent, Cava is the Spanish DO with the highest export share.
