Austrian sparkling wine with a protected designation of origin (PDO) is now called "Sekt Austria". Quality sparkling wine with a protected designation of origin ("Sekt PDO") may only be sold with the terms "Sekt Austria", "Sekt Austria Reserve" or "Sekt Austria Große Reserve" since 26.1. 2022. All sparkling wines of the three classifications must pass a quality test at the Federal Office of Viticulture, which entitles them to carry the red-white-red banderole on the top of the sparkling wine bottle. This is to emphasise quality and origin.

For all three categories, the grapes must come from a single federal province and their origin must be compulsorily indicated as a protected designation of origin. Sekt Austria Reserve and Sekt Austria Große Reserve may also mention a Großlage, municipality or vineyard as well as the designation "hand harvest" and must be produced according to the traditional bottle fermentation method. Residual stocks with the old designations may still be marketed during a transitional phase.
