The digital wine atlas riedenkarten.at, which contains information on 5,000 Austrian vineyards, now also includes geological characteristics. According to Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM) as the client, this is a world first.

The website riedenkarten.at, created in co-operation between ÖWM, the Institute for Geography and Regional Research at the University of Vienna and the plan+land office, already contains information on the average temperature, rainfall, planted grape varieties, sunshine duration, altitude and slope for each single vineyard vineyard. From now on, the type of subsoil - for example slate, loess, clay -, soil type such as brown or black earth, soil texture and information on lime and humus content, permeability or water supply will also be provided.

According to Managing Director Chris Yorke, this makes Austria the first wine country in the world to show the soil types and geological characteristics of all its individual vineyards ("Rieden"). "This is a milestone with which we are taking on a pioneering role in viticulture internationally."
