The Rioja Alavesa region in northern Spain sits on 200 million liters of wine, which corresponds to almost three years of production. This is reported by the Spanish news agency "EFE". Soon, this year's harvest, estimated at 70 million liters, will be added.
According to "EFE", regional representative Ramiro González will urge the region's wine trade committee, the Consejo Regulador of Rioja, to better regulate production in the region. González pointed out the globally declining consumption, particularly the halving of the Chinese market and the "almost complete collapse" of Rioja consumption in Great Britain.
The Basque government has provided the region with aid amounting to 25 million euros, including funding for distillation projects and green harvesting to reduce yield.
