Oliver Ende "The great guide to wine production": This is the title of a 3D animation on the subject of wine production developed by the Hamburg graphic designer Oliver Ende. In just under ten minutes, he very clearly shows how wine is grown. The film can be used excellently for further education as well as for marketing.

"I worked on this project for one and a half years," reveals Ende, who specialised in 3D animation and painting after attending a private art college. The film is the first of two parts: It begins with the factors influencing viticulture - soil, climate, grape variety, cultivation method and vinification - and ends with the German Prädikat system, which determines wine quality by grape ripeness. All factors are explained in detail in moving images and a spoken commentary; German, English, Spanish and French are available as language versions.

The second part of the wine animation is already in the works and is expected to be released in 2023. "It will deal with the differences between harvesters and full harvesters, cellar work and further processing of the grapes, different types of pressing, reductive and oxidative ageing and much more," says Ende.

Going where no camera can go with animation

He started ten years ago with a 3D animation on the production of whisky, followed by beer, coffee and finally wine. "These are all drinks that I like myself," the artist says and smiles. What motivates him, apart from the joy of craft work, is the desire to develop and learn. "Even as a child, I was fascinated by the what-is-what books, where you could see behind things, into them and through them," Ende reports. "It's what drives me in my explainer videos: going where no camera can go in animation."

Like all his 3D films, the wine animation is based on meticulous research. In addition to the internet, relevant specialist literature and insider conversations, a sommelier friend helped with wine knowledge and enthusiasm. "The Great Guide to Wine Production" and all other explanatory videos on culinary and other topics by Oliver Ende are available in three licences: for commercial use, for non-commercial use and for use in schools and universities.
