The Vinea Wachau winegrowers' association wants to present a biodiversity report for the entire winegrowing region for the first time. The Wachau is thus the first wine region in Austria to jointly prepare such a report. In cooperation with the nature conservation officer of the Wachau World Heritage Site, Hannes Seehofer, the winegrowers will take stock of the natural diversity of their vineyards. Following this, a concept will be developed to promote biodiversity, especially with regard to Wachau-specific species.

Several other sustainability projects are already underway, such as the expansion of bird nesting sites for hoopoe and wryneck, as well as an ecological understock planting to promote soil ecology. Both initiatives are already showing initial success. By 2024, all members of Vinea Wachau should be certified with the "Sustainable Austria" seal of quality. From the 2023 vintage onwards, it will be obligatory for all winegrowers.
