Villa Bucci

One of Italy's most renowned wineries, Villa Bucci (Marche), has been sold to the Veronesi family. Founded by Ampelio Bucci, Villa Bucci became one of the most important wineries for Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi in the Italian province of Marche. With seemingly revolutionary ideas, 88-year-old Ampelio Bucci turned an inexpensive and simple wine from an unknown region into one of Italy's best-known white wines. "I was convinced that Verdicchio, being a non-aromatic grape, could produce more interesting wines the longer it was stored, when it developed the so-called tertiary aromas," was his philosophy. The winery owns 25 hectares of vineyards in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classica zone and six hectares of the red grape varieties Montepulciano and Sangiovese in the DOC Rosso Piceno.

The Veronesi family runs the Oniverse Group, which includes the clothing brand Calzedonia and the wine retail chain Signorvino. It already owns several wineries: La Giuva in Valpolicella, Podere Guardia Grande in Sardinia, Tenimenti Leone in Lazio, and is planning a new project for Trentodoc sparkling wines at high altitude. Ampelio Bucci, who will remain with the company as an external consultant, says: "I am selling so that Villa Bucci can continue to be an excellent example of Made in Italy."
