The cellar master of the G.H. Mumm champagne house, Laurent Fresnet, died after a short illness at the age of 56. Fresnet came from a family of champagne winemakers and studied oenology, biology and biochemistry at the research centre in Avize and the University of Reims. After stays in New Zealand, South Africa, Portugal and the South of France, he returned to Champagne in 1994. Among other things, he managed the La Vigneronne cooperative in Vertus, was appointed to Champagne Henriot by Joseph Henriot in 2006 and joined Mumm as chef de cave in early 2020.

Fresnet was awarded "Sparkling Winemaker of the Year" at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in 2015 and 2016 and was president of the Association of Champagne Cellar Masters. César Giron, president of Maison Mumm, pays tribute to him: "Laurent Fresnet was known for his authenticity, his generosity, his friendliness and his communicative energy and was appreciated by everyone. He brought his passion for wine, his affection for terroir and his vision of excellence to Mumm."
