Italy has the highest share of certified organic vineyards in the total winegrowing area of 614,960 hectares, at 17.8 percent (109,423 hectares). Sicily, Puglia and Tuscany alone account for 55.8 per cent of the national organic wine-growing area and 55.5 per cent of the organic wine produced in Italy. The record holder is Sicily, which with 29,669 hectares has 27.7 per cent of all organic wine-growing areas in Italy. These figures were published by Italia Bio, the association of Italian organic wine producers, based on data from the Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentare (ISMEA) for 2019.

Italia Bio spokesperson Lillo Alaimo Di Loro points out that most organic wines produced in Italy and Spain are exported. The largest consumer countries, Germany, France and the USA, on the other hand, produced organic wines mainly for domestic buyers. This, he says, is a sign "that despite the great wine tradition in Italy, there is still a lot of work to be done on the drinking culture".

From 23 to 26 June, the international fair for organic and biodynamic wines "Biodivino" will take place in San Martino delle Scale in Monreale, Sicily.
