Around 517 million corks have been collected and recycled in France since 2010. This corresponds to 2,000 tonnes of cork. This means that the country recycles more wine corks than Italy, Portugal and the USA combined. According to the Fédération Française du Corège (French Cork Federation), France was well ahead of Italy (100 tonnes), Portugal (70 tonnes) and the USA (45 tonnes) with 350 to 380 tonnes of cork collected in 2023.
The Portuguese cork manufacturer Amorin made a major contribution to this with the "Eco Bouchon" collection programme introduced in 2010. It recycled 204 tonnes of cork in 2023 alone. Recycled cork is used in the manufacture of numerous products, such as insulation panels, fashion, design and acoustic products, as well as in the aerospace and automotive industries.
Amorim has already donated more than 600,000 euros to medical research through the project. French and Portuguese cork oak forests are also being financed. In the Pyrénées-Orientales department, 8,900 new trees have been planted.
