A number of wine fans spent the night in tents outside the main shop of the Norwegian state-owned wine merchant Vinmonopolet in Oslo. Some of them even held out for several weeks in sub-zero temperatures to get their hands on rare bottles from Burgundy, including three bottles of Romanée-Conti Grand Cru and crus from Domaine Armand Rousseau.

This ritual has been going on for several years. This year, the first three campers arrived on New Year's Day, exactly one month before the Vinmonopolet's annual Burgundy release on 1 February. "Some campers spent a month outside. It was very cold - with temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius," said Arnt Egil Nordlien, product manager for top wines at Vinmonopolet.

Only the first in the queue had a chance to secure the special bottles for their cellar. Those waiting passed the time with board games and snacks, among other things. The day before the release, 56 people spent the night outside the retailer's largest shop. When the shop opened at 10.00 am, there were up to 200 people in the queue. This means that all the top wines from Burgundy in Norway are already sold out for this year. The bottles of Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2020 were offered at a retail price of 7,125 euros per bottle.
