Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena Penna, who retired from the family-owned Barolo winery Vietti **** in spring, will in future advise the Castiglion del Bosco winery in Montalcino. One of the focal points will be the identification of crus for single-vineyard wines. Castiglion del Bosco owns 62 ha of vineyards with different exposures and altitudes as well as a luxury hotel and a golf course. It was a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino consortium in 1967.

The basis for the collaboration was laid by consultant Beppe Caviola, who had previously worked for Vietti. In a statement, Elena Penna highlights the potential of the estate and oenologist Cecilia Leoneschi, who says: "The first thing I did was to identify the plots within the estate's vineyards." In 2003, the single-vineyard Brunello Campo del Drago was released. Recently, three Rosso di Montalcino were also launched as single vineyards.

Unlike in Piedmont, where Currado's father already made a single vineyard with the 1961 vintage, crus are not yet established in Montalcino, which Luca Currado comments, "We are promoting the 'Piedmontisation' of the region." He assumes that his ability to find special sites and promote their identity could help in the development of Castiglion del Bosco. He brings experience with the Sangiovese grape through his consultancy work for the Querciabella winery in Chianti Classico. Penna and Currado also want to contribute their decades of expertise of the commercial aspects.
