Wine-Searcher, the world's largest database for product, price and availability information on wine, has been acquired by Flaviar from New York. Founded in 2012, the company is successful in Europe and the USA with tasting sets and subscriptions for spirits. With Wine-Searcher from New Zealand, founded in 1999, Flaviar has secured a database with around 18 million entries from 33,000 suppliers in 126 countries. It is searched almost 300 million times a year and has over five million users every month.

Commenting on the acquisition, Jugoslav Petkovic, co-founder and CEO of Flaviar, said: "We are experts in spirits and e-commerce in the US and Europe, while Wine-Searcher brings unrivalled global reach, depth of wine knowledge and an inventory of historical pricing and availability data. The e-commerce share of alcoholic beverage sales is still very low compared to other product categories, especially in the US. We think the reason is that there is a lack of modern, user-friendly services in our industry."

Julian Perry, CEO of Wine-Searcher, comments on the transaction: "This will create more value for the many retailers we work with and enrich our data and the relevance of our data to the industry. It will also provide us with more resources to accelerate our technological development, for example in building AI-driven services."

The purchase price was not disclosed.
