According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), the range of non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines offered by wine estates, vintners' cooperatives and wineries has increased significantly during the past few years. However, their market share of the total wine consumption is currently still below one percent, however, "almost all suppliers report increasing sales figures". The market share of non-alcoholic sparkling wine is already significantly higher at about five percent of sparkling wine consumption.

As early as in spring 2020, the Nielsen market research institute had organized a consumer survey on the consumption of non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines on behalf of the DWI. Among the 16,883 people surveyed from the Nielsen household panel, it was still little known that there is also wine without alcohol. Only 15 percent of the respondents knew alcohol-free white wine, twelve percent the red and nine percent the rosé alternative. Of these groups of people, about a quarter had already drunk the indicated non-alcoholic type of wine. With non-alcoholic sparkling wines, the level of awareness was significantly higher at 53 percent. Almost two thirds of the people who knew about non-alcoholic sparkling wines had also already consumed them. Participation in road traffic was named as the most important consumption motive, but the general abstention from alcohol also played a larger role.

With a share of 60 to 66 percent, more women consume non-alcoholic wine and sparkling wine than men, according to the survey. Non-alcoholic white wine is drunk above average by consumers with a high level of affluence and disproportionately by those whose children no longer live in the parental home.
