Wine consumption in Germany has fallen by 4 per cent. As announced by the German Wine Institute (DWI), per capita consumption of still wines fell from 20.7 litres to 19.9 litres in the wine year from 1 August 2021 to 31 July 2022. This means that, on average, each inhabitant drank around one bottle less than in the same period of the previous year. The consumption of sparkling wines remained stable at 3.2 litres per person.

In total, 19.4 million hectolitres of domestic and foreign wine, including 2.7 million hectolitres of sparkling wine, were consumed in Germany during the period under review, 500,000 hectolitres less than in the previous year. As the population has grown by almost one million people to 84.1 million inhabitants, this results in a per capita consumption of 23.1 litres per year.

In its press release, the DWI attributes the development in wine consumption to "changes in consumer behaviour and demographic change".
