In the first seven months of 2022, China imported 19 percent less wine from abroad than in the same period of the previous year. In total, slightly more than 2.1 million hectolitres of wine were imported into China in 2022. This is confirmed by figures of the Italian market research institute Nomisma. Compared to the record import year 2018, the currently imported amount even represents a decrease of almost 50 percent. Especially French wines are less in demand (-59% compared to 2018), but imports from Italy are also noticeably declining (-32% compared to 2018).

The reasons for the slump in wine imports are manifold: The Corona policy of the Chinese government with recurring lockdowns, the tensions with the USA and Europe regarding Taiwan, the political crisis with Australia, which led to the cancellation of orders, as well as China's position in the Ukraine war, have led to economic instability in the country. The wine consumption of the Chinese is also suffering from this.
