German wineries have planted more and more international grape varieties over the past ten years. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the area under vines for Sauvignon Blanc in Germany grew by 177 percent in the period from 2011 to 2021. Currently, Sauvignon Blanc is cultivated on a total of 1,800 hectares, which accounts for 1.7 percent of the total German vineyard area. Chardonnay is also popular with vintners. The area has increased by 84 percent to 2,600 hectares in the same period. Likewise, international red wine varieties such as Merlot (+61%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (+47%) are benefiting from the increased temperatures.

The increase in international grape varieties is particularly remarkable in light of the fact that the total wine-growing area in Germany increased by only one percent to about 103,400 hectares in the same period.
