According to the online trading platform LiveTrade, prices for Burgundy on the secondary market rose by 26 percent in the first half of the year, those for Champagne by eleven percent. Wines from Italy and the Rhône increased by eight percent compared to 2021. For Bordeaux, the growth was significantly lower at five per cent. Nevertheless, wines like Haut Brion, Lafite Rothschild, Cos d'Estournel, Petrus, Mouton Rothschild and Margaux are among the most traded. Champagnes such as Roederer Cristal, Dom Perignon and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne were particularly in demand. Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2007 gained 50 per cent in the first six months of the year, making up for a slight underperformance last year, according to LiveTrade. Prices rose by more than 20 per cent for Krug 1998, Bollinger RD 2004 and Louis Roederer Cristal 2006. Tignanello and Sassicaia dominate the market for Italian wines. Château Rayas (+ 37 percent) and Guigal's Cote Rotie La Turque (+ 28 percent) lead the field of Rhône wines.

According to Matthew O'Connell, CEO of LiveTrade, the strong demand for Burgundies is based on their rarity. This attracts collectors and investors with very high equity, and he sees no reason why this would change. In the second quarter, LiveTrade did note a "slight cooling of intense activity". But, O'Connell said, even in a tight economic environment, demand for luxury assets for ultra-high net worth individuals is "pretty independent of macroeconomic events. People are looking for assets that have a proven track record of high returns in tough times. Especially if they have a low correlation with other assets and are proven to protect against inflation," he says. "The wine market is very positive at the moment - and we expect it to stay that way."
