At the end of December, Asti DOCG producers voted in favour of introducing a rosé version of Asti Spumante. At the meeting of the Associazione Comuni del Moscato (Association of Moscato Communes), they voted in favour of expanding their portfolio. The rosé Asti is made from Moscato Bianco and the red Brachetto variety. The aromatic grapes were previously used to produce the sweet and sparkling Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG. The new production rules still have to be approved by the institutions and incorporated into the specifications. The aim of the wineries is to produce the new variant as early as the 2024 harvest.
A rosé version had already been discussed in the appellation for several years. The large sparkling wine houses in particular were looking for a new source of sales due to the declining demand for Brachetto d'Acqui and the trend towards rosé wines.
