37 wine bottles from the early 1970s were discovered during excavation work at the Freiherr von Gleichenstein winery in Vogtsburg-Oberrotweil in Baden (Kaiserstuhl). The bottles, buried in loess during renovation work in 1974, were now found during cellar expansion work. They date from the vintages 1970 to 1972 and contain Riesling, RieslingxSilvaner, Ruländer, Spätburgunder, Weißherbst and Silvaner.
One bottle contained a note with a message. The message in the bottle was hidden along with the wines by three workers who were manually digging the tunnel at the time, and it read: "If the wine is found, the builders ask to be notified." Winery operator Johannes von Gleichenstein complied with the request and has contacted the two men who are still alive. He will taste some of the wines, all others are to be stored in the estate's own archives.
