18,000 vines of the mother vine of Grüner Veltliner, the St. Georgen vine, are now being planted out in other wine-growing areas of Austria. In 2000, a single previously unknown vine was discovered near St. Georgen in Burgenland. It turned out to be the long-missing mother vine of the most important Austrian variety Grüner Veltliner. The newly founded 'Verein zur Kultivierung der St. Georgener Rebe' (Association for the Cultivation of the St. Georgen Vine) nurtured and propagated the treasure, planted 1,000 vines in the village in two steps and vinified its grapes from 2014 onwards.

Now 13 other wineries in Burgenland, Weinviertel, Kremstal and Wachau have agreed to plant the vine as well, including Ernst Triebaumer*****, Günter Triebaumer****, Gernot Heinrich*****, Norbert Bauer ***, Franz Prechtl, Rainer Wess and Roman Jäger. In total, they will plant 18,000 sticks. The chairman of the association, Hans Moser, emphasises that all the examinations on the health of the vines were positive. "With the diversity of the areas where the St. Georgen vine is now also planted out, we can sound out the varietal characteristics on different terroirs and learn a lot. The goal is to one day achieve approval as a quality grape variety." He is also in talks with other wineries about planting.

Experts attest the variety good aromatic qualities and density. At ProWein, there will be a themed 'St. Georgener Rebe' tasting on Sunday 19.3.2023 from 9 am at the Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM) stand.
