At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, wine and champagne will continue to be served in the VIP and business lounges despite the ban on alcohol in the stadiums.
The FIFA website currently offers the "Match Private Suites" for the individual matches, which are now fully booked. They include separate lounges with the best view of the pitch, parking spaces in the stadium car park, a five-course menu as well as "soft drinks, several types of beer, champagne, wines selected by the sommelier and premium spirits", FIFA says in its offer. The price per match, depending on the choice of extras, is at least 22,450 US dollars.
The fans in the stadium, however, will only be offered non-alcoholic beer because FIFA surprisingly banned the planned serving of Budweiser two days before the start of the World Cup. The US beer company estimated the loss at the equivalent of about 72.5 million euros and may file a lawsuit. Qatar is a conservative Muslim country where alcohol consumption is forbidden for residents.
