Julien Alsoufi, sommelier at BASF Gastronomie GmbH in Ludwigshafen, is the winner of the "Sommelier Cup 2022" of the German Wine Institute (DWI). Second place went to Katharina Iglesias, sommelier at Winebank in Hamburg. Third place went to Connor Münster, sommelier and sales manager at Wechsler Winery in Westhofen (Rheinhessen). The competition took place on 20 and 21 November at the Atrium Hotel in Mainz. Around 30 wine experts and junior staff from gastronomy and trade took part.

The participants had to taste 45 white, red and noble sweet wines from all German wine-growing regions and correctly classify the vintage, origin and style of vinification. In the theoretical part, knowledge about growing regions, grape varieties, vinification, wine market and wine law was tested. The five finalists also had to recognise two hidden wines, perform a perfect sparkling wine service for the guest and give wine recommendations for three-course menus.

The three first-place winners received cash prizes worth a total of 3,250 euros. Julien Alsoufi is also allowed to participate in the "Sommelier Summer Class 2023", the annual meeting of international sommeliers organised by the DWI.
