Last year, 3.3 percent less wine was purchased in Germany than in 2017, according to the German Wine Institute (DWI) based on the latest GfK wine market analysis.

According to the figures, wine per capita consumption including consumption outside the home, which is derived from the wine consumption balance sheet, also declined slightly in the past wine year. It amounted to 20.5 liters of wine per person and year, which corresponds to a decline of 0.4 liters compared with the same period in the previous year. The calculation is based on the total quantity of wine consumed in Germany of 17 million hectolitres, in relation to the total German population of 82.8 million inhabitants.

If one adds the 3.3 litres of sparkling wine consumption, which also fell slightly by 0.2 litres, this results in a per capita consumption of 23.8 litres of wine and sparkling wine in Germany with a total volume of around 20 million hectolitres.
