The Wine 2022 Architecture Prize was awarded for the fifth time at the Centre for Building Culture in Mainz. The four prize winners are the Cantzheim Winery and Guest House in Kanzem/Saar, the Mauerwinzer wine shop and taproom in Berlin, the Vineyard Terrace in Freyburg an der Unstrut and the Wine Cellar with Barrique Cellar in Winterbach. A total of 48 projects were assessed by the seven-member jury, chaired by architect Prof. Andrea Wandel from Saarbrücken.

In addition to the design concepts, the Architecture Prize Wine focused on the topic of sustainability. Cautious building and sufficiency, but also the handling of energy were essential aspects. Joachim Rind, President of the Rhineland-Palatinate Chamber of Architects, said at the award ceremony: "It is no coincidence that timber construction is becoming more and more widespread. If we use concrete carelessly, despite its enormous carbon footprint, so that it has to be torn down after twenty years and replaced by new concrete, then that certainly does not contribute to sustainability. We have some examples here that have actually been implemented with a lot of wood, but also with other materials. On top of that, if we consciously use energy-saving technologies in such a way that we don't build high-tech machines, then that's the right approach."

Heinz-Uwe Fetz, Vice President of the German Winegrowers' Association and member of the jury, added: "I have been observing for some time now that our young, modern generation of winegrowers' enjoyment of their profession is not only reflected in excellent wine qualities, but also increasingly in the very appealing design of new buildings and conversions in their wineries. The young generation is keen to experiment and is very open to the issue of sustainability. The German Winegrowers' Association is pleased about this development. My message to the young generation in particular is therefore: Keep it up!"

The exhibition can be seen until 22 May 2022 at the Zentrum Baukultur in Mainz on Wednesdays to Fridays from 2 to 6 pm and by appointment. It will then be presented as a touring exhibition.
